Revised WASSCE requirements expand higher education access

The University of Sierra Leone’s revised WASSCE admission requirements have created additional opportunities for candidates seeking to pursue higher education, according to lecturer Mr Sheku Putka Kamara. Speaking during an interview with Sarah Kallay blog (SKB), Mr Kamara discussed the implications of the university’s decision to accept candidates with a minimum of C6 in English Language for degree programmes and D7 for diploma programmes under the revised admission arrangement.
He explained that the adjustment provides an opportunity for candidates whose WASSCE performance may have previously limited their chances of progressing to university-level education, however, noting that the revised requirements should not be interpreted as a permanent change to the university’s admission structure, suggesting that the arrangement could be reviewed in the future depending on the university’s decisions.
Mr. Kamara further discussed concerns surrounding students’ performance in English Language, highlighting the importance of strengthening the foundation of secondary education to better prepare candidates for the academic demands of tertiary institutions, urging students who stand to benefit from the revised admission requirements not to become complacent because of the opportunity provided to them.
According to him, the opportunity should serve as motivation for students to improve their academic performance, remain committed to their studies and work towards completing their university education. He encouraged beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and recognise that gaining access to university is only one stage of their educational journey.
The revised admission arrangement has therefore brought renewed attention to the opportunities available to WASSCE candidates and the responsibilities that come with pursuing higher education.
