RSLAF Operates 4,837 Acres of Rice, Cashew Farms Across Sierra Leone

The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) is operating 4,837 acres of rice and cashew farms across six locations in the country as part of its contribution to food security and agricultural transformation.
The farms are located in Port Loko, Tonkolili, Moyamba and Bonthe districts, with rice cultivation accounting for the majority of the agricultural land alongside cashew production.
The figures were highlighted following a visit by a group of retired senior and general-ranking RSLAF officers to the various farm sites on October 2, 2026. The retired officers were accompanied by the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Kemoh Tewoh Sesay.
During the visit, the retired officers expressed satisfaction with the development of the rice and cashew farms and commended the Ministry of Defence and RSLAF leadership for supporting the Government’s Feed Salone initiative.
The 4,837 acres are spread across six sites. These include 565 acres of cashew at Makallay and 215 acres of rice at Mankara, both in Bakeh Loko Chiefdom, Port Loko District.
Another 366 acres of rice are located at Rumbeh in Kama Soto Chiefdom, Port Loko District, while Masang in Mamoutha Mayosoh Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, has 691 acres of rice.
The remaining 3,000 acres are divided between Yoni in Kamajei Chiefdom, Moyamba District, with 1,500 acres of rice, and Tormabum in Bum Chiefdom, Bonthe District, also with 1,500 acres.
The initiative forms part of the RSLAF’s stated contribution to the Feed Salone programme, with the Ministry of Defence maintaining that the Armed Forces’ participation in national development is supported by Section 165(2) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991.
Deputy Minister of Defence, retired Colonel Muana Brima Massaquoi, has said the RSLAF will continue working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and other partners to support the Feed Salone initiative.
“The RSLAF will assiduously work with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and other partners to achieve the Government’s Feed Salone Initiative,” Massaquoi said.
Meanwhile, President Julius Maada Bio is expected to conduct a symbolic rice-harvesting ceremony at one of the RSLAF farm sites later this month.
