Russian national Pavel Korolev appeared before Magistrate Mustapha Brima Jah at Pademba Road Court No. 1 to answer an indictment containing conspiracy to defraud and multiple counts of fraudulent conversion.
The defendant was granted bail which were set at three million Leones (approximately $3,000,000 USD) with a requirement for two sureties.
The prosecution alleges that between January and June 2025, in the Bombali Judicial District, the defendant conspired with unidentified associates to defraud the Chief Executive Officer of Ashkenazi Capital Sierra Leone Limited.
Specifically, the indictment details the unauthorized conversion of capital intended for artisanal mining operations into personal assets. The financial schedule of alleged misappropriations includes:
A disbursement of $10,000 (237,000 Leones) recorded on March 13, 2025.
Subsequent tranches received in March 2025 totaled $74,500, followed by April disbursements amounting to $56,000. These transactions represent a substantial breach of fiduciary duty under the Larceny Act.
The aggregate value of the alleged fraudulent conversions exceeds several hundred thousand United States dollars.
The indictment underscores that these funds were diverted for personal enrichment, violating established legal statutes governing entrusted capital.
During the committal proceedings, the charges were formally read; however, no plea was entered. Defense counsel subsequently petitioned for the renewal of the previous bail application.
In granting bail, the court mandated that the two sureties be Sierra Leonean residents of at least forty years of age, possessing valid regulatory identification and passports.
The defendant must surrender all international travel documentation. Furthermore, one surety is required to provide a registered title deed or conveyance within the Freetown jurisdiction as collateral.
The judicial proceedings are scheduled to reconvene on May 6, 2026.
