The Inspector General of Police, Dr. William Fayia Sellu, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Amara Idara Bangura, presided over the official commencement of the Hon. Nyuma Trophy 2026 in Kenema. This high-profile engagement underscores a unified commitment to community leadership and public outreach.
Distinguished by a focus on social advocacy, the event was attended by Madam Matilda Sellu, President of the Police Wives Association (POWA) Sierra Leone. Her participation highlighted the essential role of support structures within the security sector in fostering youth development and driving positive social change.
The tournament opened with a competitive fixture between Kallon FC and Gombulago FC, drawing a significant audience. Central to the event is the thematic mandate, "Say No to Drug Abuse, Work to Feed Salone," which seeks to redirect the energies of the youth toward productive livelihoods and away from illicit activities.
Key regional security officials, including the Regional Police Commander East, Francis Brima Meinday, and the Local Unit Commander (LUC) for the Kenema Division, CSP Emmanuel Kpulun, were present to facilitate a secure and well-coordinated opening ceremony.
During the proceedings, the IGP, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Madam Sellu engaged with athletes and officials to promote values of discipline and resilience. The ceremonial kick-off serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts of security institutions and their families in advancing national peace and community cohesion.
