The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) and the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) have formalized a strategic partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the SLRSA headquarters in Freetown. This collaboration is designed to significantly reduce road fatalities and enhance post-crash emergency medical care across the nation.

The comprehensive MOU outlines a framework focused on bridging the response gap between accident occurrence and professional medical intervention. Key components of the agreement include:

  • Advanced First Aid Training: Providing essential skills to personnel and first responders for stabilizing victims at accident scenes.

  • Enhanced Accident Response: Optimizing communication and logistics to expedite the arrival of Red Cross emergency teams at crash sites.

  • Public Sensitization: Conducting joint educational campaigns to raise awareness among drivers, pedestrians, and stakeholders regarding road safety and prevention measures.

Leaders from both institutions emphasized that the partnership serves as a proactive measure against rising national road safety challenges. By integrating SLRSA’s regulatory functions with SLRCS’s expertise in humanitarian aid and emergency medical services, the initiative targets a reduction in "golden hour" response time—the critical period for prompt treatment following a traumatic injury.

SLRSA leadership highlighted the collaboration as a vital element of their comprehensive strategy to enhance road safety for all citizens, while the Red Cross reaffirmed its commitment to deploying its volunteer network and medical resources in support of the Authority's mission.

The partnership is slated to immediately implement training programs and joint highway patrols, marking a new era of strategic institutional cooperation within the country's transport sector.
