The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, recently characterized President Julius Maada Bio's tenure as having an unparalleled record in the education sector, specifically citing transformative reforms and substantial financial investments initiated over the last eight years.
In an address on AYV, Minister Bah detailed the administration's commitment to academic development, noting that a consistent allocation of 20 percent of the national budget is dedicated to the sector. This expenditure positions Sierra Leone as one of the leading global investors in education relative to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Minister Bah emphasized that these investments extend beyond traditional tuition subsidies and infrastructure development. He highlighted the school feeding program—a data-driven initiative supported by international stakeholders—as a primary catalyst for growth, contributing to an increase in enrollment of approximately three million students.
Furthermore, the Minister underscored the significant progress made in promoting gender equity. He noted that previous systemic barriers, which often led to premature withdrawal from school due to early marriage or pregnancy, have been addressed. Under the current administration, girls are provided with enhanced access and the necessary support systems to ensure completion of their education.
Geographical disparities are also being bridged, with girls in regions that historically faced low educational indicators, particularly in northern Sierra Leone, now benefiting from comprehensive educational access spanning from preschool through tertiary institutions.
Concluding his remarks, Bah reiterated that these advancements represent a fundamental transformation of the nation's educational framework. He asserted that the scale of progress achieved in recent years has exceeded prior expectations and demonstrates a steadfast commitment to expanding opportunities for every citizen.
