Severe Flooding Displaces Families in Pujehun Coastal Communities

Persistent torrential rainfall over the past week has triggered devastating floods across Sulima and three additional coastal communities in Pujehun District, compelling numerous households to abandon their residences in search of safety.

Displaced residents are seeking refuge on higher ground within their townships, while others have migrated to neighboring areas less impacted by the rising waters. The situation remains critical as local infrastructure struggles to withstand the deluge.

Keifala Kemokai, a prominent community stakeholder, informed local media that the unrelenting rains have severely compromised the structural integrity of several homes. Houses constructed from traditional mud materials have been particularly susceptible to the moisture, with many foundations beginning to crumble.

"Women, children, and the elderly are currently among the most vulnerable, facing significant hardships in securing safe and adequate shelter," Kemokai stated, highlighting the humanitarian dimension of the crisis.

Beyond the loss of housing, there are growing anxieties regarding food security. Kemokai noted that many rural households are already struggling to secure basic provisions, a situation exacerbated by the seasonal rains and now the isolation caused by flooding.

Local leaders are issuing an urgent appeal to the central government, international humanitarian organizations, and relevant stakeholders. The call for intervention emphasizes the need for immediate relief supplies and long-term measures to protect lives and property in the region.

This latest environmental crisis has reignited discussions on the inherent vulnerability of Sierra Leone’s coastal regions to extreme weather. 

Experts suggest the event underscores a pressing need for enhanced disaster preparedness, more robust early warning systems, and community-led mitigation strategies to build resilience against future flooding.
