President Julius Maada Bio of the Republic of Sierra Leone has welcomed the signing of the agreement between the State of Israel and Hamas, reached after indirect talks facilitated by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye.
President Bio commended the tireless diplomacy of the mediators and all parties involved in bringing the accord to fruition.
The President expressed support for the entry into force of the ceasefire and the commencement of the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, describing these measures as crucial humanitarian steps that uphold the dignity of families affected by the conflict and create space for efforts to end the cycle of violence.
President Bio also acknowledged the surge of humanitarian assistance reaching civilians in need and called for full, safe, and unimpeded access in accordance with international humanitarian law, emphasizing that the protection of civilians must remain paramount.
Highlighting Sierra Leone’s role on the international stage, the President noted the significance of President Donald J. Trump’s peace plan and the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit convened in Egypt.
He encouraged all stakeholders to engage in good-faith negotiations in line with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, aiming for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace that respects the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, ensures Israel’s security, and contributes to regional stability.
“As an elected member of the United Nations Security Council (2024–2025) and an advocate for rules-based multilateralism, Sierra Leone stands ready to support diplomatic efforts that consolidate the ceasefire, complete the humane release and exchange of hostages and prisoners, expand humanitarian corridors, and translate this opening into a durable political settlement so that Israelis and Palestinians alike can live in peace, security, and mutual recognition,” President Bio stated.
