The Sierra Leone Canoe Federation (SLCF) has formally announced the launch of its inaugural National Canoe Championship. This landmark event is scheduled to take place on April 27, 2026, at the Sea Coach Express facilities in Aberdeen, Freetown.

The historic competition will feature participants from sixteen prominent coastal communities, including Tombo, Bureh, Mama Beach, Sussex, Lumley, Aberdeen, and Tokeh. Athletes will compete in several sprint categories, including single-occupant, two-person, five-person, and 10-person dragon canoe events.

Federation President Abdul Karim Koroma emphasized that this championship represents a significant milestone for the advancement of aquatic sports within the region. He underscored the organization's commitment to professionalizing the sport and expanding its national visibility.

Secretary General Donald Kalokoh confirmed robust engagement from the participating communities, noting that the high level of interest reflects the substantial growth of canoeing as a competitive discipline in Sierra Leone.

Sahr Morris Jr., a representative of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL), lauded the initiative. He characterized the championship as a strategic advancement for grassroots sports development and reaffirmed the media's support for the federation's objectives.

The inaugural championship is poised to garner significant public interest as Sierra Leone continues to diversify its national sporting portfolio and cultivate talent in emerging disciplines.
