Sierra Leone’s U-17 girls have made an amazing start to the WAFU-A U-17 Girls Tournament in Liberia, securing two commanding victories and positioning themselves as strong contenders for the title. Their impressive performances have showcased both individual brilliance and cohesive team play.
The Young Queens kicked off their campaign on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, with a 2-1 triumph over Senegal at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex. Building on that momentum, they delivered another brilliant display today against the host nation Liberia, securing a decisive 3-0 win.
The match against Liberia saw Sierra Leone take an early lead in the 4th minute with a beautifully executed penalty from midfield engine Marian Sankoh, who has now earned Player of the Match honors for both games. Ruth Bawoh extended Sierra Leone's advantage in the 17th minute, striking from just outside the 18-yard box to ensure a 2-0 lead at halftime. Maseray Turay (referred to as Kadiatu Deen in one of the original stories) sealed the victory in the second half with a well-placed finish inside the penalty box, underlining the squad’s attacking prowess.
Despite the loss, Liberia's Musu Nuah and Yatta Jaliebah garnered praise for their individual skill, demonstrating impressive dribbling and long-range shooting capabilities. However, Sierra Leone's physical play, high pressing, and clinical finishing proved too much for their opponents.
With two wins from two matches and a total of five goals scored, Sierra Leone now stands firm with six points, with two more group stage matches remaining. The tournament format sees the three participating countries—Sierra Leone, Senegal, and host Liberia—competing in a home and away basis.
The Young Queens will next face Senegal on September 23, 2025, in a crucial away encounter at the SKD Sports Complex in Liberia. This upcoming match promises to be another key test as Sierra Leone continues its quest for the WAFU-A U-17 Girls title.
