During the 2025 Annual Meetings, the Minister of Health of Sierra Leone participated in the Health Works Leaders Coalition Roundtable. This event was co-chaired by the leaders of the World Bank Group and the World Health Organization, along with Japan’s Vice Minister of Finance.
The Minister emphasized that the Sierra Leone Health Compact is actively in operation, with a strong focus on achieving tangible results. This initiative is grounded in a strategic vision to establish a sustainable healthcare system that can deliver quality care and withstand future climate and public health challenges.
The Minister elaborated on the government's commitment not only to increasing access but also to enhancing the quality of healthcare services. The current strategy aims to expand the number of Primary Health Units from 1,600 to 2,000 by 2030.
Although 85% of citizens currently reside within a 5-kilometer radius of a health facility, the primary focus is now on ensuring these facilities are resilient, adequately staffed, and equipped to deliver excellent service.
Significant progress has been made in several key areas: over 380 health facilities are now utilizing solar power, with a goal of achieving 100% renewable energy coverage by 2030; more than 8,000 health professionals have been recruited, with 10,000 volunteers transitioning to the payroll; and innovations such as hybrid ambulances and energy-efficient systems have been introduced, demonstrating that health security and climate resilience can progress in tandem.
Additionally, the Sierra Leone Social Health Insurance Scheme (SLeSHI) is leading the way in domestic health financing, supported by digital platforms to ensure accountability.
The Minister concluded by inviting partners to join the nation in accelerating the ongoing transformation.
