Sierra Leone, Liberia Boost Border Security With New Immigration Partnership

Sierra Leone and Liberia have taken a significant step toward strengthening regional security and migration governance following the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) and the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS).

The bilateral agreement establishes a formal institutional framework for cooperation between the two neighbouring immigration authorities, aimed at enhancing coordination on border management and migration control.

The signing ceremony took place during an official working visit by a high-level Liberian delegation to Sierra Leone. Officials from both sides underscored the deep cultural, economic, and geographic ties between the two countries, describing the agreement as a major step in addressing shared border vulnerabilities.

The MoU is designed to improve operational collaboration, strengthen cross-border communication, and develop joint strategies to tackle key regional challenges.

Among its priority areas are efforts to combat transnational crime, address irregular migration, prevent human trafficking, and improve the efficiency of border management systems.

By shifting from informal and ad-hoc communication to a structured institutional framework, both countries aim to promote safer and more secure borders while facilitating legitimate trade and the free movement of people.

Officials from both delegations expressed optimism that the partnership will serve as a model for regional integration and security cooperation within the Mano River Union (MRU) and the wider ECOWAS sub-region.
