The Deputy Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police, Mr. Sahr Yomba Senesi, addressed the Annual Police Focal Point Meeting in Abuja on July 6, 2025, advocating for a critical initiative to bolster West African security: the creation of a standardized police roster.
This landmark proposal, delivered on behalf of the Inspector General of Police and current Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), aims to establish a pool of meticulously vetted, highly trained, and rapidly deployable officers from ECOWAS member states.
Mr. Senesi emphasized the urgent need for such a mechanism in light of persistent regional threats including armed conflict, terrorism, transnational organized crime, and political instability.
He underscored the indispensable role of police forces in peace support operations, viewing them as a vital bridge between military stabilization and the restoration of civilian governance and the rule of law.
The primary objective of the workshop, as announced by Mr. Senesi, is to develop this crucial roster, enabling swift and coordinated responses in crisis situations.
Sierra Leone, under its leadership of WAPCCO, is committed to strengthening the operational readiness of national police institutions and enhancing regional interoperability.
The ultimate goal is to foster a dynamic and functional framework that supports peacekeeping efforts, restores order, and upholds human dignity across the sub-region.
This initiative represents a significant step towards a more unified and professional security architecture in West Africa.
