Sierra Leone has achieved a remarkable ascent in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), climbing to 57th worldwide and an impressive 5th in Sub-Saharan Africa. This represents a significant improvement from its 2024 global ranking of 66th.
This substantial leap is particularly noteworthy given the nation's recent history.
The report attributes this progress to Sierra Leone's unwavering dedication to peace and unity, a commitment that has helped overcome the challenges posed by recent political unrest.
The country navigated a contentious general election in 2023, followed by a reported attempted coup, events that often destabilize nations and negatively impact peace rankings.
The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) highlights that this advancement is a direct result of continued national efforts to foster peace and unity, even amidst persistent socio-economic challenges.
The report, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), places Sierra Leone among Africa's top five most peaceful nations, affirming its positive trajectory despite the challenges of 2023.
