SLFA Appeals to Chinese Embassy for Urgent Completion of National Stadium

The President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Babadi Kamara, has called on the Chinese government and its embassy in Freetown to expedite the renovation of the National Stadium, citing concerns over the prolonged delay and its impact on football in the country.

The stadium, which has been closed for refurbishment since February 2022, was initially expected to reopen in 2024. The $40 million project is fully funded by the Chinese government but has taken much longer than planned.

Kamara highlighted that the delay has forced the national team to host international matches in Liberia, costing the government around $300,000 per game. He added that playing away from home has diminished local fan support and hindered Sierra Leone’s ability to host major tournaments, including Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“The extended closure is putting strain on the football system,” Kamara said. “It is essential that the stadium is completed promptly so the national team can play home matches and fans can return to support their team.”

Opened in 1979 with a capacity of 25,000, the National Stadium remains the only FIFA-certified venue in Sierra Leone capable of hosting international football matches. Kamara’s appeal underscores the urgent need for the project to be completed and fully operational.
