The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has celebrated the return of 158 Formed Police Unit (FPU) officers and 5 Individual Police Officers (IPOs) who have recently completed peacekeeping missions in Somalia and South Sudan, organized by the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).
This formal welcome took place during a ceremony at the Officer’s Mess in Kingtom, highlighting the officers' commitment and service while emphasizing their safe return to their families and duties within the SLP.
During the ceremony, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) acknowledged the exemplary service and discipline exhibited by the returning officers during their international assignments. He also provided updates on significant developments within the SLP that occurred in their absence, particularly the ongoing transformation of the organization from a "Force" to a "Service."
This shift aims to promote a more community-oriented approach to policing, focusing on enhancing community relations and service delivery.
The IGP noted the crucial role of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in this transformation process. He emphasized the importance of partnerships with foreign embassies and international organizations, which are instrumental in providing training opportunities, both locally and internationally, for SLP personnel as part of their professional development efforts.
Furthermore, the IGP underscored the dual significance of peacekeeping missions. They not only contribute to global peace and security but also serve as valuable avenues for capacity building and international exposure, enriching the professional experiences of SLP officers.
He addressed the potential disconnect some returnees may feel from the institution after their service abroad, urging them to remain engaged and to leverage their experiences for the benefit of their departments and the SLP as a whole.
The ceremony concluded with the returning officers expressing their gratitude and reaffirming their commitment to the mission and values of the Sierra Leone Police, ready to apply their newly acquired skills and insights to enhance policing in Sierra Leone.
