Soro Gbeima Traders Union Demand Modern Facility

Traders in Jendema, a major border town in the Soro Gbeima Chiefdom of Pujehun District, have appealed to the Government of Sierra Leone to construct a modern market structure to support cross-border commerce and enhance local business conditions.
Local vendors voiced pressing concerns over the inadequate infrastructure, emphasizing that the current setup leaves them exposed to harsh weather, particularly during the rainy season, and hinders daily commercial operations.
Describing the current state of the facility as deplorable, local trader Mabinty Bangura noted that a purpose-built facility would offer essential shelter, improve public sanitation, and create a more organized commercial hub for both vendors and buyers.
"Jendema serves as a strategic trading point due to its proximity to the Sierra Leone-Liberia border," Bangura stated, adding that modernizing the infrastructure would stimulate economic growth and generate sustainable livelihoods for women and youth.
Speaking on behalf of the business community, vendor Kumba Komba urged the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, the Pujehun District Council, the National Revenue Authority, and development partners to prioritize the project in upcoming regional development plans.
Komba emphasized that women traders are central to supporting household incomes and driving the local economy.
A safe, modern facility would not only improve working conditions but also attract surrounding communities and regional commerce, driving broader economic activity in Jendema.
