The Adama Team Foundation, in collaboration with the Well Woman Clinic, recently concluded a one-day Breast Cancer Awareness engagement for individuals with special needs.

This event, held during October's globally recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month, took place at the foundation's office at 68 Bai Bureh Road in Freetown's East End, with active participation from disabled women.

Adijatu Salam, Head Sister at the Well Woman Clinic, highlighted that breast cancer remains the most prevalent form of cancer in Sierra Leone, explaining its development through the uncontrolled growth of abnormal breast cells.

She offered a practical demonstration on early detection and stressed the critical importance of timely diagnosis and treatment. Sister Salam also dispelled common misconceptions, such as the unfounded belief that storing money in a bra can cause cancer, asserting a lack of scientific evidence for such claims.

Participants, including Isatu Conteh and Christiana, inquired whether breast or other body piercings could lead to cancer. Sister Salam advised against such practices and further cautioned against shisha smoking due to its detrimental health effects.

She concluded by advocating for regular exercise and medical check-ups as essential components of a healthy lifestyle for women to mitigate their risk of breast cancer.
