Sports Ministry Provides Update on Stadium Progress, Launches 2026 MDAs Competitions

The Ministry of Sports has reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitating the National Stadium and preparing for the 2026 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) Football and Women’s Volleyball Competitions.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Sports at a press briefing in Freetown, Permanent Secretary Patrick Sama said the installation of plastic seats at the National Stadium remains a priority for President Julius Maada Bio’s administration to improve spectator comfort and meet modern standards.

Sama announced that this year’s MDAs competitions will be held under the theme “From the Office to the Field, Driving Peace and Productivity Through Sports.” He disclosed that 35 government institutions have registered for the football competition, while 14 will participate in women’s volleyball.

He said the Ministry, in collaboration with the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Technical Committee, had finalised the competition rules, orientation sessions and fixtures to promote discipline, fair play and sportsmanship.

added that the competitions align with the government’s Human Capital Development agenda by promoting teamwork, physical fitness and social cohesion among public servants. He encouraged participating institutions and the public to support the events as a means of strengthening inter-agency collaboration and national unity.

During the question-and-answer session, NSA Executive Director Mohamed Alphaka Conteh Esq. clarified that no fixed completion date had been set for the National Stadium rehabilitation, although work was ongoing.

Conteh also said the NSA was working with security agencies to regulate inter-area competitions. He explained that the ban on inter-area, school and community leagues in the Western Area would be lifted once the ongoing regulatory efforts had been concluded.
