Supreme Court Orders New Trial in Ikubolaji Nicol Manslaughter Case

The Supreme Court of Sierra Leone, led by Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, has issued a unanimous decision requiring the commencement of a new trial in the high-profile manslaughter case involving Mr. Ikubolaji Nicol, a former manager at Sky Bank.

This ruling, announced on Friday, directs that the case be reassigned to a different judicial officer within the High Court for a fresh hearing.

The Court has instructed the High Court to promptly resume proceedings under the supervision of a newly appointed judge, thereby removing the procedural obstacles that previously hindered the case's progress.

Mr. Ikubolaji Nicol faces charges of manslaughter, specifically for allegedly causing the death of Ms. Sinnah Kai Kargbo in 2022.

The legal proceedings have been marked by significant challenges and delays, leading to the Supreme Court's intervention following a request by Mr. Nicol’s attorney, Mr. Roland R.V. Wright, for the recusal of the presiding High Court Justice, Alhaji Momoh Jah Stevens.

During a brief, one-day hearing, Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, along with Justices A.M. Bangura and other distinguished members of the Court of Appeal, ordered that the trial proceed without further procedural delays.

The Court underscored the importance of the swift administration of justice and instructed the High Court to appoint a new judge to oversee all proceedings related to this case.

This decision marks a significant step toward resolving the protracted legal issue.

The State's interests were represented by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr. Osman Kanu, and his legal team, while the defense was represented by Roland Wright & Associates.

According to the Supreme Court's directive, Mr. Ikubolaji Nicol remains in custody at the Pademba Road Male Correctional Centre, awaiting his appearance before the newly appointed High Court judge for the continuation of his trial.
