Tombo CHC Gets Major Upgrade to Improve Childbirth Services

Pregnant women in Tombo and surrounding communities are expected to benefit from improved maternal healthcare following the upgrade of the maternity unit at the Tombo Community Health Centre (CHC).

The upgraded facility is expected to benefit more than 1,300 pregnant women by improving access to antenatal and postnatal services. The number of postnatal beds has also been increased from three to six, while a dedicated maternity unit has been established to provide women with a safer and more dignified childbirth experience.

The health centre has also received essential medical equipment, including a fetal Doppler for monitoring unborn babies, neonatal resuscitation equipment, a radiant warmer for newborns, and an autoclave for sterilising medical instruments.

CHC serves a population of nearly 32,000 people, including more than 7,000 adolescents, making the upgrade significant for maternal and child healthcare in the community.

The improvement forms part of efforts to support the Government’s 300 Days of Activism Campaign and its Triple Zero ambition, which seeks to eliminate preventable maternal deaths, preventable child deaths, and zero-dose children in Sierra Leone.
