TSC Director Dismisses Claims of Non-Payment of Teachers’ Salaries

The Director of Teacher Management at the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), Mrs. Marian Sallay Abu, has dismissed claims that government teachers are not receiving salaries, insisting that all recruited teachers are on the government payroll and are being paid.

Speaking on Liberty Online TV, Mrs. Abu said concerns raised by teachers are mostly related to salary levels rather than non-payment.

“There’s no teacher in this country that is not receiving salary,” she said, adding that all teachers formally recruited into the government system are being paid in line with their employment contracts.

She explained that each teacher signs a contract outlining their salary structure upon recruitment and acceptance into the teaching service.

“We won’t just say come and take this salary. Each and every teacher signed a contract for the salary they were presented with, and they accepted and signed,” she said.

Mrs. Abu noted that teaching remains a structured profession under government employment terms, stressing that while salary concerns exist, issues of non-payment do not apply to government-employed teachers.

She further stated that more than 40,000 teachers are currently on the government payroll and receive monthly salaries.

According to her, although calls for salary increases persist, the size of the workforce presents financial constraints for government wage adjustments and planning.

The statement comes amid ongoing discussions on teacher welfare and salary concerns within Sierra Leone’s education sector.
