Two Remanded Over Alleged Theft of Cardiologist’s US$37,100 Echo Machine

Two businessmen have been remanded at the Male Correctional Centre after appearing before Pademba Road Court No. 2 over allegations of stealing a high-value medical diagnostic device belonging to renowned cardiologist and Dean at Connaught Government Hospital,

Professor Dr. James Russell.

Magistrate John Manso Fornah ordered the remand of Abdul Jabbie Mansaray and Joseph Bellon on Monday, July 27, 2026, as they face five charges, including conspiracy, larceny, obtaining money by false pretences, and receiving stolen goods, under the Larceny Act of 1916.

The case centres on the alleged theft of a Vivid IQ Echo Machine valued at US$37,100, which is said to be the property of Dr. Russell.

According to the charge sheet, Mansaray allegedly conspired with unknown persons on January 13, 2026, at No. 3 Bathurst Street, Freetown, to commit larceny. He is further accused of stealing the medical device from Dr. Russell’s property on the same day and location.

The prosecution also alleges that between January 28 and 29, 2026, Mansaray obtained money by false pretences from Fatmata Jullet Nicolls and George Russell through Orange Money transactions. He allegedly collected Le2,500 and Le1,015 respectively after falsely claiming the funds were needed for transportation to recover the stolen Echo Machine.

Joseph Bellon, the second accused, is alleged to have received the stolen device between January 13 and 28, 2026, at Kossoh Town, knowing it was stolen property belonging to Dr. Russell.

No plea was entered by the accused persons as the matter is currently before the court for committal proceedings. Prosecutor Yusuf Isaac Sesay requested a short adjournment to allow the prosecution to prepare and present its first witness.

Due to the seriousness of the allegations, Magistrate Fornah denied bail and ordered both men to remain in custody at the Male Correctional Centre.

The matter has been adjourned to August 3, 2026, for further proceedings.
