The United States Government has officially approved a $480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact with Sierra Leone, which will also see Sierra Leone contributing an additional $14.2 million to the program.
This significant compact, signed in September 2024, represents a pivotal step in advancing the energy infrastructure of the West African nation.
According to a press release from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Information and Civic Education, the initiative aims to expand the national power grid, improve electricity distribution, and strengthen the institutional framework of the energy sector.
Sierra Leone's selection for this phase of the MCC program, being one of only 12 countries worldwide and five in Africa, highlights international confidence in the nation’s ongoing reform efforts. This investment is expected to stimulate private sector participation, create employment opportunities, and foster long-term commercial and trade partnerships between the two countries.
Both governments are now prepared to begin the implementation phase, further strengthening bilateral relations.
