United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has extended his congratulations to President Julius Maada Bio as Sierra Leone commences its month-long Presidency of the UN Security Council for November 2025.
During a telephone conversation, Mr. Guterres commended President Bio's leadership and acknowledged Sierra Leone's commendable progress in governance and peacebuilding over the years. He expressed confidence that the country's tenure at the Council's helm will contribute to strengthening international cooperation on critical global matters.
The two leaders also addressed the political and security landscape in West Africa and the Sahel. Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations' enduring commitment to assisting nations in the region in addressing persistent challenges related to security, development, and humanitarian requirements.
Sierra Leone's Presidency follows its initial leadership term in August 2024, an experience that provided a platform to share insights from its own peacebuilding journey and foster dialogue on achieving sustainable stability.
This second term will concentrate on four primary global priorities: conflict-related food insecurity, climate-related security risks, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, and the essential role of youth in peace and security decision-making processes. These interconnected topics are recognized as pivotal challenges influencing both local and international stability.
The November Presidency offers Sierra Leone another opportunity to underscore the synergistic relationship between peace, climate action, and inclusion in supporting global advancement. Furthermore, it signifies a crucial moment for the nation's increasing influence in international affairs, demonstrating the capacity of smaller states to lead discussions on shared global priorities.
