VP Intervenes in Koidu Mosque Demolition Dispute

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has stepped in to mediate a growing dispute between the Muslim Jamat and local health authorities over plans to demolish a community mosque to accommodate the expansion of Koidu Government Hospital.

During a high-level engagement with hospital officials and religious leaders, Dr. Jalloh emphasized that his role was to facilitate constructive dialogue rather than impose a solution. He urged both sides to reach a goodwill agreement balancing public healthcare infrastructure needs with the religious rights of local worshippers.

While expressing broad support for the hospital upgrade, representatives of the Muslim Jamat voiced strong concerns over the lack of a permanent replacement. They stressed the vital need for a dedicated worship center to serve hospital staff, patients, and residents before any demolition takes place.

Koidu District Medical Officer Dr. Mohamed Gbessay Sheku outlined the background of the site and reaffirmed management’s willingness to collaborate closely with the Muslim community during the transition period.

Following the talks, the Vice President conducted a site inspection of the current mosque and visited an alternative facility located roughly 100 meters away, identified as a potential temporary space for prayers.

The mediation forms part of wider consultations between the Ministry of Health and Partners In Health as authorities seek full community consensus before finalizing expansion plans.
