Water Ministry Unveils Plans To Improve Water Services Nationwide

The Ministry of Water Resources says the Government of Sierra Leone is intensifying efforts to improve access to safe water and sanitation through a multi-year programme supported by development partners, including the World Bank.

Minister Dr. Sao-Kpato Max-Kyne disclosed this on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press conference in Freetown.

She said the programme will expand water coverage, improve infrastructure, strengthen water utilities and improve management of the country’s water resources. About 23,000 smart water meters are expected to be installed to reduce water losses, monitor consumption, improve revenue collection and make water services more sustainable. She also urged consumers to pay their water bills to support maintenance and expansion of services.

The programme will also improve sanitation through better public toilets and waste management, particularly in underserved communities.

Dr. Max-Kyne stressed the need to protect water catchment areas from environmental damage and harmful human activities, with the Ministry working with communities and stakeholders while exploring alternative livelihoods for affected residents.

She said stronger cooperation among local councils, water utilities, communities and government institutions will be essential to implementing the reforms.

The Minister described the programme as a major investment linked not only to water access but also to public health, environmental protection, economic activity and citizens’ well-being, while urging communities to protect water infrastructure and national water resources.
