In a high-stakes Match Week 34 fixture at the SLFA Academy on Thursday, July 16, the Wilberforce Strikers narrowly defeated Luawa FC 1-0, effectively securing their spot in the Leone Rock Premier League while condemning Luawa FC to relegation.
The match, which carried significant weight for both sides, was decided early in the contest. In the 9th minute, a defensive lapse from Luawa FC allowed Wilberforce’s Mohamed Kargbo to break through two defenders and enter the 6-yard box.
Kargbo’s unselfish pass to Mohamed Tarawallie set up the game's only goal, a clinical tap-in that would ultimately determine the outcome of the match.
While Luawa FC controlled the majority of possession throughout the second half and applied significant pressure on the Wilberforce backline, they were unable to convert their dominance into a goal. Both teams displayed tactical discipline and defensive compactness throughout the match, which limited clear-cut scoring opportunities.
For the Wilberforce Strikers, the hard-fought victory provides necessary relief and guarantees their safety in the national top flight. Conversely, the result serves as a final farewell for Luawa FC, confirming their relegation to Division One.
