SLP Strengthens Security Preparations Ahead of ECOWAS Summit in Lungi

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has intensified security preparations ahead of the upcoming ECOWAS Summit in Lungi, as the country prepares to host Heads of State, government officials, delegates and other guests for the regional gathering.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu, who also serves as Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), outlined measures being implemented to ensure the safety and security of summit participants, residents and visitors.

The Inspector-General said the SLP has deployed additional personnel and resources to maintain public order and create a secure environment throughout the summit period. The measures include increased patrols, improved traffic management, access control at strategic locations and intelligence-led security operations.

He added that the Police are collaborating with other security institutions and relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth movement of delegates and the general public during the event.

Beyond operational deployments, the SLP has also strengthened community engagement and public awareness campaigns, urging citizens to cooperate with security personnel, adhere to traffic regulations and observe security guidelines.

The Police emphasised that public cooperation remains critical to maintaining a safe, peaceful and welcoming atmosphere for all participants and visitors.

As part of its operational readiness, the SLP has deployed vehicles and motorcycles to enhance mobility and improve response capacity during the summit.

Through professionalism, vigilance and collaboration with partner security agencies, the Sierra Leone Police reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the successful hosting of the ECOWAS Summit and showcasing the country’s preparedness to host major regional events.

The security arrangements form part of Sierra Leone’s broader efforts to ensure a successful summit in Lungi, where regional leaders are expected to engage in high-level discussions on issues affecting West Africa.
