Woman Charged Over Alleged Burning of Seven-Year-Old Niece’s Hand

The Motema Division of the Sierra Leone Police has charged a woman to court for alleged cruelty to a child following a reported incident in Njagbwema Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District.


The accused, Doris Bangura, a resident of Njagbwema Town, was formally charged after the incident, which reportedly occurred on 14 February 2026.


According to police reports, the matter was brought to the attention of authorities by two community residents, Zainab Mattia and Tamba, who alleged that the suspect set fire to the hand of her seven-year-old niece.



Preliminary investigations indicate that the child sustained injuries as a result of the alleged act. Police sources disclosed that during questioning, the accused reportedly expressed remorse, stating that she acted out of frustration over the child’s alleged repeated theft of small sums of money.


The case has since been forwarded to court for further proceedings as investigations continue.


Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting children’s rights and ensuring that cases involving abuse and cruelty are dealt with in accordance with the law.
