Workplace Accident Leaves Two Dead, Two Injured

A workplace accident at the Freetown International Airport construction site has left two workers dead and two others injured.
The incident, which occurred at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre section of the site, claimed the lives of two workers—a Senegalese national and a Sierra Leonean national. Two other individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at Life Care Hospital in Freetown.
According to sources at the scene, the workers were buried by dirt while working at the construction site. By the time they were uncovered, two of the workers had died, while the other two survived with severe injuries and were transported to the hospital.
In response, the Ministry of Employment, Labour, and Social Security dispatched a preliminary investigation team led by Ing. Osman Conteh under the direction of the Commissioner of Labour. The team’s mission is to determine the cause of the fatal accident and recommend preventive measures to ensure future workplace safety.
Investigators have begun engaging with the management of FB Group, the firm overseeing construction at the facility.
Mr. Dincsoy, the company’s MEP Manager, confirmed FB Group’s full cooperation with the government probe and affirmed their commitment to complying with Sierra Leone’s labor and compensation laws.
Ministry officials have also reached out to the family of the deceased Sierra Leonean worker to offer condolences and assure them that statutory compensation will be provided. Meanwhile, repatriation arrangements are underway to return the body of the Senegalese victim to Senegal for burial.
The Ministry stated that further details will be released to the public once the ongoing investigation is concluded and its formal findings and recommendations are published.
