  • Bo Rangers beats ASMS 2-0 to extend winning ways in WACC tourney

    Bo Rangers extended their winning ways in the West African Champions Cup (WACC) on Thursday, beating ASMS 2-0 in Guinea. The Sierra Leonean side took the lead in the 32nd minute through a goal from Ibrahim Turay . They doubled their advantage in the 85th minute through a strike from Amadu Mansaray. The win keeps Bo Rangers top of Group A with six points from two matches, with two points ahead of second-placed Horoya AC of Guinea. Bo Rangers were the better team throughout the match and created a number of chances. ASMS had a few opportunities to score, but they were denied by some good saves from Bo Rangers goalkeeper Abdul Bundu. The win is a major confidence boost for Bo Rangers, who are now the favorites to win the 2023 WACC Cup.

  • EDSA announces a three days scheduled blackout

    The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority(EDSA) has today, in a press release, announced the shutting down of their 161KV transmission line from Bumbuna to Freetown’s 161KV substation at Kingtom, to increase output for Western Area residents. The shut-off will allow for the connection of the 25MW Makoth Solar Power to the lines and the process will require three days, Friday 11th, Monday 14th and Wednesday 16th August, from 6am to 2pm on the mentioned days. They apologized for the inconveniences during the process.

  • President Maada Bio arrives in Abuja for an urgent ECOWAS meeting on Niger coup

    H.E President Julius Maada Bio yestlerday 9th August 2023, arrived in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, to participate in an extraordinary meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of states. The urgent meeting has been called to address the escalating political crisis in Niger following a recent coup d'état. ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, who also serves as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, has convened this meeting with the primary objective to discuss the implications of the recent coup d'état in Niger and strategize on maintaining stability within the region. H.E Julius Maada Bio is accompanied by ECOWAS Speaker Hon. Tunis and Foreign Affairs Minister Timothy Musa Kabba. This gathering is the second gathering of the ECOWAS Authorities since the coup d’etat in Niger and the meeting will be convened today 10th August 2023. As the meeting unfolds, leaders are expected to engage in in-depth discussions, analyzing the current situation in Niger and its potential impact on the wider West African region. The outcome of the meeting will likely include a joint statement and a comprehensive plan of action to address the crisis, ensuring the restoration of democratic governance and the well-being of the people of Niger. President Bio is expected to return to Sierra Leone shortly after this engagement.

  • Mawa Traore of Mogbwemo Queens bags WOTM award against AS Mande

    Mogbwemo Queens goalkeeper Mawa Traore made her second competitive appearance for the club in the CAF Women's Champions League qualifier and was named the Woman of the Match in yesterday's goalless encounter against AS Mande from Mali at the SKD Sports Complex. The 2022/23 Sierra Leone Women's Premier League champions, Mogbwemo Queens FC, displayed another impressive performance in their second match of the ongoing CAF Women's Champions League Zonal Qualifiers, however, the game ended in a draw with AS Mande of Mali. Goalkeeper Traore was awarded the Woman of the Match after making crucial saves denying the few chances created by AS Mande while playing on the break. Mawa Traore who is also the favourite starter of the Guinea female national team joined Mogbwemo Queens Football Club from Club Olympique de Ratoma (COR) after she was spotted during her loan spell with Patricia Humu Football Club in the 2022/23 Sierra Leone Women's Premier League season. Meanwhile, Mogbwemo Queens FC are now in third place in the group and need to win their final match against Determine Girls on Saturday August 12, 2023 to have a chance of qualifying for the Next round of the CAF Women's Champions League.

  • IGP Fayia Sellu says twenty-seven persons are suspected of subversion of State Power

    The Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Sierra Leone, Fayia Sellu, announced at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press briefing that twenty-seven(27) individuals have been suspected of subversion of State Power. The IGP stated that 17 military officials have been apprehended thus far, including eight middle-level officials of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), six non-commissioned officers of the RSLAF, two police officers, one retired police superintendent, and two civilians. He also stated that five military officers and three Sierra Leone Police officers are on the run. This diverse range of individuals suggests a complex web of potential involvement in the subversive activities. In response, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has intensified its efforts to track them down. The IGP affirmed that cooperation with neighboring countries and international partners, facilitated through the International Police Organization (Interpol), is underway to ensure the arrest of these fugitives. He also stated that increased security measures and heightened surveillance have been implemented at the country's borders. The IGP concluded by urging the public to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to the police.

  • Sierra Leone Golf Association (SLGA) calls for support to participate at Zimbabwe’s Junior Open

    The Sierra Leone Golf Association (SLGA) has appealed for support to enable its golfers participate in the Zimbabwe Junior Open, scheduled to take place from 18-20 August 2023 at the Borrowdale Brooke Golf Estate in Harare. The President of the SLGA, Ibrahim Sankoh, made the call during an intensive training session for the golfers at the Freetown Golf Club. He said that the association was facing financial challenges and needed support from the government and other stakeholders to send a team of golfers to the tournament. Sankoh said that the golfers were talented and had the potential to compete at the international level. He added that participating in the Zimbabwe Junior Open would be a great opportunity for them to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience. The golfers expressed their gratitude to the SLGA for the opportunity to train and compete in the Zimbabwe Junior Open. They said that they were determined to represent Sierra Leone well and make the country proud.

  • ECSL holds a Post Election Evaluation retreat on the June 24th Multi-eir Election

    The Commissioner for the Election Commission for Sierra Leone Mohamed Kenewe Konneh, during the induction of their post election evaluation retreat, conducted yesterday 7th August at Galliness in Bo, remarked that his vision for the conduct of elections have always been one of relative peace, allowing the continuation of daily activities including schooling, trading and more, right through the throngs of elections itself. This he expressed, was achieved with the effort of his team. He furthered that the level of praise from the Civil Society, foreign countries and The President can only be an act of God. He informed that there were challenges during the election especially in the Western Area both rural and urban due to the refusal of some staff to work. He urged all present to be aware that the objective is to put heads together to work on and improve the challenges they faced, building out strategies to aid improvement of the activities of commission to enhance in the next elections. The Western Regional Commissioner Zainab Umu Moseray said that though the election was relatively peaceful, they were faced with challenges with both staff and Logistics on the day of the Election but with a little rearrangement, they were able to service those areas that were in need. The evaluation retreat continues today, 8th August 2023, with analytic reports from regional representatives of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone.

  • Journalist Samuel Wise Bangura Attacked and Robbed of Valuables Worth Millions

    In a shocking incident that unfolded today, renowned journalist Samuel Wise Bangura was viciously attacked and robbed, resulting in the loss of his valuable possessions. The incident occurred at approximately 16:47 along Wilkinson Road, near Kingdom Hall, sending shockwaves through the community. Wise, a well-respected figure in the field of journalism, fell victim to an audacious robbery that left him shaken to the core. The assailant, who remains unidentified, brazenly targeted Wise while he was riding in a kekeh towards Lumley, a popular neighborhood in the city. The total value of the stolen items is estimated to be worth millions of Leones. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the local community, as Wise is known for his dedication to his profession. Many believed that the Law enforcement agencies should launch a thorough investigation into the incident, hoping to identify and apprehend the assailant as soon as possible. Well meaning residents in Sierra Leone are condemning this brazen act and remain hopeful for a swift resolution to the investigation, ensuring that justice is served and that such incidents are prevented in the future.

  • Bo Rangers Beat Horoya 4-3 on Penalties in WACC Cup Opener

    Bo Rangers defeated Horoya FC 4-3 on penalties in the opening match of the West African Champions Cup on August 7, 2023, in Conakry, Guinea. The match was tied 1-1 after regular time and extra time, and Bo Rangers scored all four of their penalties, while Horoya FC only scored three. This is Bo Rangers' first WACC Cup victory, and it is the first time a Sierra Leonean team has participated in the tournament. The victory is a major achievement for Bo Rangers and for Sierra Leonean football. It is a sign that Sierra Leonean teams are capable of competing at the highest level. Bo Rangers will now look to win their first West African Champions Cup title.

  • SLFA Commences the Construction of four Standard Artificial Turf Pitches across Sierra Leone

    The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has announced that construction of four standard artificial turf pitches across the country has commenced, fulfilling its promise to improve the playing atmosphere. The work began on July 31, 2023. In July, the Vice President 1 Harold Nat Johnson concluded talks and signed an agreement with Edel Grass to construct pitches at the SLFA Football Academy Field, Approved School Playing Field, Port Loko City Field, and Bo Coronation Field. The project, which is funded by the FIFA Forward Program, is expected to have a positive impact on the development of football in the country. The projects are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024. The renovation of Kono Town Field, Kenema City Field, and Makeni City Field is also part of the project.

  • Outgoing Sports Minister Nyelenkeh hands over to new Minister James-Teima

    Outgoing Sports Minister Ibrahim Nyelenkeh formally transferred the position of Minister to new Minister Augusta James-Teima at a ceremony attended by stakeholders in the sector. In his speech, Nyelenkeh thanked Allah for his guidance throughout his tenure, and said that despite the challenges, he is proud to have led the Leone Stars to the 2022 AFCON Tournament in Cameroon. He congratulated Madam James-Teima on her appointment as the first female Minister of Sports, and expressed his confidence that she would live up to the expectations of the public, given her knowledge of the sports industry. Nyelenkeh thanked the staff of the Ministry of Sports for their support and assured the new minister of his willingness to offer his continued advice and support to James-Teima. James-Teima thanked Nyelenkeh for his service and affirmed that she will seriously consider the recommendations in her handover notes in terms of continuity and development within the Ministry of Sports. She acknowledged the challenges ahead, but expressed her hope for a productive term in office, with the positive support of her staff, the National Sports Authority, and Nyelenkeh.
