- An unidentified corpse has been discovered at SLRSA compound
The corpse of an unidentifiable man between the ages of 30-forty five has been discovered in the compound of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority today 10th May 2023. The discovery was made at around 9am after a heavy downpour of rain. According to multiple sources, including officials of the SLRSA, the origin of the body is unknown but given that the deceased body was found close to a drainage passing through the compound, along KIssy road, he could have drifted from anywhere or deposited in the drainage itself. The Ross road police has been alerted and the corpse has been taken to the mortuary to determine cause and identity.
- Gymnastics: Sierra Leone Gymnastics Association Prepares for World Gymnaestrada Amsterdam 2023
For six days, between 30th July to August 5th 2023, Amsterdam will be the centre of the World Gymnaestrada 2023 and participants as well as spectators from all over the World, including Sierra Leone will be welcomed to the Capital of the Netherlands. In lieu of the above, the Sierra Leone Gymnastics Association has intensified training for gymnasts at their Brookfields training ground to better prepare them for participation at the World Gymnaestrada outing in Amsterdam. The training opening session was combined with music from the national dance troop whilst gymnasts displayed different skills. In her brief statement, the President of the Sierra Leone Gymnastics Association, Hannah Williams, noted the essence of the training and outlined efforts they have made to attract funds for their soon to be World Gymnaestrada Amsterdam. Meanwhile, the training had a proper blend of Male and female gymnasts with unwavering desire to make headway in the sport. Mohame Foday Kandeh , a top gymnast, stressed on their level of preparedness to showcase the true picture of Sierra Leone internationally. The aim now of every gymnast amidst the training is to promote the culture and beauty of Sierra Leone as they head for greatness with the wherewithal.

- Genoa Fan Celebrates Mohamed Kallon amidst Serie A Promotion
Former Sierra Leone and Genoa Star Mohamed Kallon was celebrated by a fan recently in Italy, after his former team got promoted to the Italian topflight following the absence of the team in the League. Kallon took to social Media to expressed delight over the Genoa Fan's show of love and appreciation and wrote "My former team Genoa booked their promotion ticket to the Italian Serie A this afternoon.... I was shocked when I saw one of their fans celebrating, supporters wearing my number # 33 Kallon Jersey of 26 years ago." Mohamed noted with Joy the magnitude of love to warrant such a display. Kallon like many other African stars , gracing the Italian Serie A is the subject of such displays stemming from fond memories of their days in the League, still held dear.

The CEO and owner of HADA FC Louis Toumbas has made his first interaction with the players and officials of HADA FC at the Sierra Leone Football Association Secretariat at Kingtom. The move by the CEO to interact was geared towards the strengthening of the camaraderie the team has built overtime and most importantly to make known his intentions to open the team's club house. The Australian based football philanthropist Louis Toumbas, who has touched the lives of the players and non players alike during his speech outlined his big ambitions for the team and how he wants to bring the people closer to God through the beauty of the game. Parents of the players in the team , expressed delight and presented gifts to the magnanimous Louis for helping their children and noting that they appreciate all what he has done and still doing for the boys as they hope to collaboratively help the team to reach key Benchmarks in football . Louis Toumbas was overwhelmed with Joy over his interaction with the team for the first time as he has only been seeing photos and videos of the Team and he confessed how elated he was to experience firsthand account of the togetherness and love for God shown by the team and the progress made thus far. He maintained that the players should always honour their parents for their days to be longer on earth and underscore the need for the footballers to exhibit discipline and respectful for authorities. CEO Louis informed the officials and some football administrators of his plans to construct a Stadium for the boys in the not too distant future. The boys were extremely delighted and that prompted them to present all the trophies they have won to the CEO and faithfully assured him of their uninterrupted drive to win more laurels for the team. They also presented gifts to Louis as a Show of appreciation . Louis Toumbas , other invited guests from the Football Association decorated both the U-13 and U -17 players with medals for the trophies they won a couple of days ago. - Culture radio lectures on tackling hate speech in light of approaching of general elections
It is of no secret that the proliferation of hate speech has been a major call for concern especially now when Sierra Leone will hold its general election on June 24 2023. It is on this ground that the management of Culture radio organized a day training for Journalists and bloggers as a way to enlighten on the need to combat hate speech in the cause of doing their job in informing and educating their various audiences. The CEO of culture radio Father Elijah Mohamed Gegra noted that the purpose of the workshop is to help equip Journalists and bloggers to help counter hate speech. He expressed his concern over the increase use of hate speech in the media, particularly on social media platforms, emphasizing that journalists and bloggers ought to be responsible in their reporting and to avoid promoting hate speech that could potentially incite violence and cause harm to individuals or groups. The training, which was held on May 5 2023, was well attended by journalists and bloggers from various media outlets across the country. The facilitator of the event Mustapha Sanassie Biro paid more premium on Insult, discrimination, dehumanization, demonization, incitement to violence as the key classification of hate speech amongst many others, with a nudge for all present to focus on the importance of promoting peace and unity through responsible reporting. Participants were taken through various interactive sessions where they were educated on the dangers of hate speech and the role of the media in promoting peace and harmony in society. They were also trained on how to identify and avoid hate speech in their reporting, and how to report on sensitive issues without promoting hate speech. Speaking to reporters after the training, some participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to learn and be reminded of their responsibilities as journalists and bloggers. They pledged to use their platforms to promote peace and unity, and to avoid promoting hate speech in their reporting. As Sierra Leone approaches its general election, it is crucial for the media to play a responsible role in promoting peaceful elections. The training organized by Culture Radio is a step in the right direction towards achieving this goal, with hope that other media outlets will follow suit in promoting responsible journalism and avoiding hate speech.
- Commonwealth engages Dr. Samura Kamara on the need for national Unity and upholding democratic Value
Dr Samura Kamara, the Presidential candidate of APC in the June 24th elections, on 07 May 2023 visited the Commonwealth Secretariat in London to engage the Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland KC, on key issues related to the country’s upcoming elections. This engagement comes at a time many are of the view that holding democratic values and principles in the upcoming elections in Sierra Leone must be made a priority. They both discussed the need for free, fair, and transparent elections, as well as the importance of peaceful and inclusive participation of all citizens in the electoral process. On his part, Dr. Kamara emphasized the need for national unity in Sierra Leone and how this can be achieved through the promotion of democratic values and the peaceful resolution of any electoral disputes. Former Mena Queens Coach Hassan Malik Mansaray has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Sierra Leone Women's Under-20 team , the Sierra Leone Football Association Executive announced through a public notice dated 3rd May , 2023. The Former Airtel Rising stars award winner with Suba Football Club , is making a return to the West Africa football Union tourney for a second stint, after assisting Abdulai Kaloga'Bah as assistant Coach 1 of the Sierra Queens during the WAFU Zone 'A' Women's Tournament in 2020, and also in the qualifying series when they hosted their matches in Liberia due to the renovation work at the Siaka Stevens stadium. Hassan disclosed to this medium, that he is excited and grateful to the President of Sierra Leone Football Association and Executive Committee for the confidence they reposed in him. He maintained that he understands the dynamics around the women's game and that would give him the upper hand to earn good results. The Female U-20 that is expected to commence on the 22nd of May to the 3rd of June 2023 , would be Hassan Mansaray's big test in the field of coaching. Meanwhile , his appointment will be for the period of May 2023 , to May 2024 except otherwise communicated to him. Broadcaster Hawa Dauda has also been appointed as Head of Media for the National Women's U-20 Side. - Ministers of Energy and Finance Commit to enhancing Sierra Leone's Energy Capacity
Sierra Leone's Ministers of Energy and Finance, Alhaji Kanja Sesay and Sheku Fantamadi Bangura have committed to enhancing energy capacity for economic development in Sierra Leone. The Ministers were at a signing of a memorandum of understanding with partners, millennium Challenge Corporation, after deliberating on increasing the country's existing and potential energy capacities. The signing is to conclude deliberations surrounding Sierra Leone's eligibility standing and ensuring that the proposed Compact documents are submitted to its Board of Directors for approval, expectedly in the last quarter of 2023. The two Ministers attributed their achievement to the efforts made to improve social and good governance sectors. Significantly, the proposed energy Compact is expected to bring about some foundational investments in Sierra Leone's transmission network, including the construction of the Southern Corridor 225kV transmission line, the National Dispatch Centers and complementary projects at sub-transmission level, and substations on the 161kV line running from Bumbuna to Freetown. Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay, lauded the reforms in the Aide Memoire, noting that they address critical areas and have the potential to positively impact investments in the energy sector.
- SLFA appoints Morlai Kamara as scout and International Talent Developer for National teams
The Sierra Leone football Association Executive Committee has in a public notice dated 3rd May 2023 , appointed Sierra Leone's UK based Morlai B Kamara to serve as SLFA's International Talent Developer and Scout for the Country's National team. The notice went on to say that Kamara's mandate includes but is not limited to scouting of Sierra Leonean players for potential national teams representation and organizing scouting matches for Sierra Leonean players abroad at all levels. Morlai is also a co-founder and director of a local youth team named Area Best LTD , which has played a crucial role in the last few years for Local Youth teams in his community in South East London. Prior to his appointment by SLFA, Kamara has been helping Academy Scouts and Coaches for Tottenham Hotspur under 12 and 16 respectively. Morlai won a couple of trophies with Area best as director and co-founder and also helped youngsters to fulfill their dreams of playing the Premiership in England and Leone stars Kamil Coach Conteh who was his team Captain at Area Best , also had a brief spell at Watford Football Club. Morlai Kamara has started work effective immediately as International Talent Developer and Scout for Sierra Leone national teams from Tuesday 25th April , 2023 to Wednesday 5th June 2025.
- CAF rejects SLFA' s proposal to Host Matchday at Southern Arena
The Confederation of African football (CAF) has rejected the Sierra Leone Football Association's proposal to host Sierra Leone Vs Nigeria Matchday qualifier at the Southern Arena in Bo City. According to the African Football body , the decision is owing to the lack of Standard hotels in the country's second city of Bo. The Group A fixture is scheduled for June , 2023 , as hosts Sierra Leone remains upbeat about qualification to keep their chances of reaching the Afcon finals in Ivory Coast next year. The last time Leone stars played at home , they held Nigeria to a goalless draw in a 2020 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Freetown. The streams of concern from the fans is how quick the FA will secure a nearer venue in the neighborhooding countries of Guinea and Liberia as time is desperately running out for Sierra Leone to obtain a back-to-back Afcon appearance. - Tennis: Murray town tennis club blazes new paths in tennis development
The President of the Sierra Leone lawn tennis association , Ezekiel Kelvin Kellie has described the recent Murray town tennis club competition as a giant step forward in showcasing the game. He remarked that tennis as a family sport needs to grow and that the initiative by the Murray Town Club should serve as a challenge to other Clubs within the Tennis family to unanimously take the discipline to greater heights. He commended the invaluable contribution of the Murray town Tennis Club for creating the leeway for tennis to take its rightful place among the many sporting disciplines in the country. He was speaking after himself and David Morsay won the men's double Championship at the Wilberforce Tennis Court. Explaining the essence of the Competition, the President of Murray town Tennis Competition , Col. Roland Gbondo, said the tennis Competition was geared towards helping players and administrators alike to renewed their commitment in helping the game to reach key benchmarks in terms of development and appealed to the authorities to allow the said competition to become an annual calendar event for talent identification and shaping the game to meet the needs of the time. The Competition attracted the movers and shakers in Sport including the Minister of Sports Ibrahim Nyelenkeh , SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima among many other personalities. One man who still has memory of how tennis saved his life is Sam Jalloh who wrote a book titled " How tennis saved my life" during the dark days in Sierra Leone's history. In his own words, Sam shares his dogged determination and will to endure pain , to plough through dangers, to fight to stay alive, to see one more sunrise , one more day and smile one more time at his beloved mum. Today , Sam enjoys his career as an International Tennis Coach touring with players all over the World. The muttered hope is that someday soon, the next US Open tennis star would come from Sierra Leone.
