12-Day “Blackout” Start for Bumbuna Plant Maintenance

The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has commenced a planned 12-day nationwide power service disruption to facilitate essential maintenance at the Bumbuna Hydroelectric Plant.

This annual maintenance exercise, scheduled from May 18, 2026, until May 29, 2026, is integral to enhancing the efficiency, safety, and long-term reliability of Sierra Leone's electricity generation and distribution system.

The scope of work requires engineers and technical experts to conduct crucial inspections, repairs, and servicing of key equipment at the Bumbuna facility, a primary source of the country's hydroelectric power.

While EDSA emphasizes that this measure is necessary for strengthening the national grid, it will result in temporary electricity interruptions impacting Freetown and other communities nationwide.

This maintenance program is part of ongoing efforts to reduce unexpected power outages and ensure the stability of the long-term electricity supply. Residents, businesses, and institutions are strongly advised to take adequate preparatory steps to minimize operational disruptions during this period.

EDSA appeals for public patience and understanding, assuring that this short-term inconvenience is a mandatory undertaking to secure a more stable and reliable electricity supply upon the completion of the works. This action represents a planned maintenance exercise crucial for strengthening the national infrastructure, ultimately reducing the likelihood of future unplanned outages.
