“2030 Was Just a Jab” - SLPP’s Mambu Clarifies Election Remark

SLPP National Public Relations Officer Moses Mambu has clarified that his recent reference to a possible 2030 election was made “out of fun” and was not a serious indication of when Sierra Leone’s next election would be held.
He described the “2030 agenda” as a “political basketball” and said the remark was simply “a jab.”
Mambu’s clarification follows earlier comments suggesting that the next election could be held in either 2028 or 2030, sparking public discussion as Sierra Leone’s next general elections are currently expected in 2028.
He reaffirmed the SLPP and government’s commitment to the country’s democratic credentials and praised President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership.
Mambu also raised a separate issue concerning Sierra Leone’s presidential tenure, arguing that the current five-year term may be too short given the economic cost of holding elections every five years. He suggested that the country could consider extending the presidential term to seven years during the ongoing constitutional review, while stressing that this is his personal opinion and not government policy.
His comments therefore address two separate issues: a clarification that his 2030 reference was not an announcement about the next election, and his personal proposal for a longer presidential tenure. The next general election remains expected in 2028.
