$3 Million Transit Initiative: Jagaban’s 25 Buses Cleared for Operation

A major privately funded transportation initiative is poised to launch following the arrival and clearance of 25 modern buses at Queen Elizabeth II Quay. Philanthropist Mohamed Omodu Kamara, popularly known as Jagaban, invested US$3 million into the fleet to alleviate the persistent transit challenges facing commuters across the nation.

The project, which began in July 2025, involved a rigorous procurement process in China. 

Jagaban personally inspected and secured 16 customized 60-seater buses from Yutong Bus, alongside nine additional vehicles from Golden Dragon specifically selected for their suitability in rural terrain. By September 2025, shipping arrangements were finalized through Ronghao Motor, concluding with the shipment’s arrival in Freetown this July.

Jagaban has framed the initiative as a "game-changer" for economic growth, emphasizing that reliable transit is essential for accessing healthcare and education. Beyond mobility, the project aims to stimulate the local economy by:

• Creating diverse jobs for drivers, conductors, technicians, and administrators.

• Providing professional training at a new, dedicated bus depot.

• Offering free transportation for the first two months of operations to assist citizens.

With the fleet cleared as of 29 July 2026, the project now enters its operational phase. 

Current priorities include the finalization of the depot facility and the recruitment of personnel. This initiative arrives at a critical juncture for Freetown residents, promising to bridge the gap in public transport availability and affordability.
