Sierra Leonean-Liberian musician Alonzo Teah Abasi has been cleared of all drug trafficking charges and released from custody, concluding a four-month legal process that began with his arrest at the Sierra Leone-Liberia border.
Representatives for Mr. Abasi confirmed his release on 10 December 2025, following a "comprehensive review of the matter" which fully exonerated him. His team released a statement asserting that the dismissal vindicates his persistent claims of innocence. "Throughout the process, he remained cooperative and expressed full confidence in the justice system’s ability to establish the truth," the statement detailed.
Mr. Abasi, also known as "Alonso Yeah," was initially detained on August 7, 2025, by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) at the Bo Waterside Port in Grand Cape Mount County. Authorities had alleged his involvement in the trafficking of 844 grams of Methcathinone, a potent synthetic stimulant, with an estimated street value of USD 8,440 (NLe 1.6 million). The substance was reportedly found concealed within the rear door of a blue Nissan Primera during a standard vehicle inspection.
The musician's acquittal has been positively received by his fanbase and peers, who have expressed relief at the swift resolution and the clearing of his name.
With the dismissal of the charges, Mr. Abasi is now free to resume his professional music career and public activities, as regional authorities continue their efforts to combat drug trafficking.
