A large-scale anti-drug operation conducted by the Makeni Police has resulted in the apprehension of 123 individuals struggling with addiction, who have subsequently been transferred to a rehabilitation centre situated along the Makeni–Kabala Highway.
The operation was spearheaded by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Victor Manfred Williams, involving personnel from the Makeni and Panlap Divisions, with strategic support from the Regional Police Headquarters.
This multi-agency effort was executed in close collaboration with the Mayor of Makeni City Council, Abu Bakarr Lamtail Kamara, and local youth who were instrumental in identifying clandestine locations and providing assistance during the raid.
The coordinated intervention targeted individuals involved in the use and distribution of illicit substances, including Kush, Tramadol, and Cannabis Sativa. The day-long exercise, described as one of the most substantial anti-drug initiatives in the city this year, encompassed numerous areas within Makeni and its surrounding communities.
Sahid Arene Kabia, also known as Gaza, Head of the Action for Rehabilitation Centre in Makeni, confirmed the facility's readiness to deliver comprehensive care, counselling, and recovery support to the rescued individuals.
He underscored that this action aligns with the government’s broader strategy to mitigate drug abuse among the youth of Sierra Leone. Mr. Kabia extended gratitude to the police, the Mayor, and the participating youth for their unified effort, advocating for continued community engagement in the ongoing campaign against substance misuse.
Speaking at the Rogbaneh Police Station, the initial holding location for the rescued individuals, AIG Williams reaffirmed the Sierra Leone Police's dedication to safeguarding lives and facilitating the recovery of users through treatment and rehabilitation, prioritising support over punitive measures.
He urged families and community leaders to maintain their support for initiatives aimed at reducing drug prevalence within their areas.
The success of this operation underscores the increasing synergy between law enforcement, local governance, and residents in combating drug abuse and assisting those facing addiction to pursue a path to recovery.
