The All People’s Congress (APC) did not provide an endorsement for Mr. Edmond S. Alpha’s nomination as Chief Electoral Commissioner (CEC) and Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL), despite receiving formal approvals from twelve other political parties.
According to State House, letters of approval were submitted by the National Democratic Alliance, Alliance Democratic Party, National Grand Coalition (NGC), Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), United National People’s Party (UNPP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peace and Liberation Party (PLP), Citizens Democratic Party (CDP), Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP), People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), United Democratic Movement (UDM), and the Republic National Independent Party.
The President acknowledged the widespread support, characterizing the endorsements as an expression of confidence in Mr. Alpha's capability to lead the ECSL and ensure impartial and credible electoral processes.
While the consensus among the twelve parties demonstrates substantial institutional backing, the APC has yet to issue a public statement regarding its position on Mr. Alpha’s appointment.
Mr. Edmond S. Alpha is anticipated to formally assume his duties following the completion of all administrative and statutory requirements, stepping into a pivotal role responsible for conducting free, fair, and transparent elections in Sierra Leone. The absence of the main opposition party, the APC, from this round of approvals is noteworthy.
