The political environment in Sierra Leone intensified today as the main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), released an official declaration citing significant obstacles in the execution of the Tripartite Committee’s reform agenda.
The APC leadership asserts that, notwithstanding the high-level consultative meeting convened at State House on March 12, the government's operational methodology has shifted from a collaborative framework to one of unilateral action. A key point of contention is the recent appointment and confirmation of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as the Chief Electoral Commissioner. The opposition maintains that such critical appointments should have been integrated into the broader consensus-building process stipulated by the National Unity Agreement.
Furthermore, the APC claims the government has yet to release the disaggregated 2023 election results, which was established as a fundamental requirement from the committee's formation.
There are growing concerns regarding the legislative timeline for the 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill, particularly the proposal to reduce the presidential election threshold from 55% to 50% plus one.
In a statement earlier today, Secretary-General Lansana Dumbuya indicated that the party is reassessing its engagement in the reform process, expressing concern over a "trust deficit" that could potentially compromise the integrity of the 2028 electoral cycle.
