APC Flagbearer Aspirant Victor Davies Pledges To Abolish Chief Minister’s Office

APC presidential flagbearer aspirant Dr. Victor A.B. Davies says he will abolish the Office of the Chief Minister if elected President of Sierra Leone, arguing that its responsibilities duplicate those of the President and Vice President.

Davies made the statement during an interview on SLiK TV, where he outlined proposed changes to the structure of government under his administration.

He identified the Office of the Chief Minister as the first government office he would eliminate, arguing that its functions overlap with responsibilities that should be handled by the President and Vice President.

“The number one ministry I’ll eliminate is the Chief Minister because it’s a complete duplication to the Vice President,” Davies said.

He also questioned the constitutional basis of the position, stating that the Constitution does not provide for the office of Chief Minister.

Davies argued that the responsibility for coordinating and overseeing the work of government ministries should fall within the remit of the President and Vice President, rather than being assigned to a separate office.

He questioned the need for an additional layer of executive authority, saying the functions currently performed by the Chief Minister could be managed within the existing executive structure.

Davies further raised concerns about the division of authority between the Vice President and Chief Minister, arguing that having both positions involved in coordinating government business could create uncertainty over lines of responsibility.

According to Davies, abolishing the office would create a clearer executive structure and ensure that government responsibilities are more clearly defined between the President and Vice President.

The Office of the Chief Minister is currently part of Sierra Leone’s executive structure and is responsible for coordinating government business.

If implemented, Davies’ proposal would represent a significant change to the current structure of the executive.

His comments come as APC presidential flagbearer aspirants continue to present their policy positions and proposed reforms ahead of the party’s flagbearer selection process.
