The Minority Leader in Parliament, Abdul Kargbo, has warned that the All People’s Congress (APC) will withdraw from Parliament if Edmond Sylvester Alpha is approved as Chief Electoral Commissioner.
Speaking on Truth Media, Kargbo said the party had previously agreed that the next general elections should be conducted in a free and fair manner, without revisiting the outcome of the 2023 elections. He urged the government to allow Parliament to amend Subsection 3 of Section 32 of the Constitution, which he described as a contributing factor to challenges in the 2023 elections.
“If Edmond Alpha is approved on Friday, we will withdraw,” Kargbo said, adding that approving Alpha before addressing these concerns could undermine ongoing reform discussions.
The statement underscores political tensions surrounding the appointment process and ongoing debates over electoral reforms ahead of future elections.
