April Jagaban Kamara on Grassroots Action and Development
Madam April Jagaban Kamara delivered a message on behalf of her husband, Sheikh Alhaji Mohamed Omodu Kamara (popularly known as Jagaban), at the Mamaya North America African and Cultural Show on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Camelot in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Organized by Group Badeanya North America, the annual gathering brought together members of the Sierra Leonean and broader African diaspora to celebrate cultural heritage, music, and community fellowship.
Addressing attendees, Mrs. Kamara emphasized that cultural events like Mamaya serve as vital connections across generations and international borders. She highlighted the deep-rooted historical links uniting Mali, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, while reflecting on the diaspora's role in preserving African traditions abroad.
Central to Mrs. Kamara’s address was her husband's core philosophy of “delivery over discourse”—an approach advocating for direct action and tangible results over political promises. She noted that his early life in Blama strongly shaped his dedication to community self-reliance and empowerment.
Mrs. Kamara outlined key areas where grassroots initiatives connected to Jagaban have made measurable progress, including:
Infrastructure & Energy: Installation of solar lighting and provision of public transportation buses.
Healthcare & Agriculture: Direct medical assistance and agricultural aid to boost local food production.
Mobility & Empowerment: Distribution of motorbikes and support for youth economic initiatives.
Beyond financial remittances, Mrs. Kamara underscored the strategic value of the diaspora’s skills, expertise, and leadership. She urged Sierra Leoneans living abroad to actively participate in national development by mentoring youth and investing in local communities.
She also spoke on the principle of "Face of Hope," characterizing it not as a political slogan, but as an AMANAH (sacred trust) requiring accountability and ethical action.
Touching upon her husband’s aspirations regarding the All People's Congress (APC) flagbearer position, Mrs. Kamara affirmed that his ambition stems from a desire to scale grassroots development models onto a national platform, targeting critical needs in healthcare, education, clean energy, and employment.
Mrs. Kamara concluded by expressing gratitude to community leaders, organizers, and guests, noting that the gathering was a testament to the enduring unity and resilience of Sierra Leoneans worldwide.
