Arms Commission Eliminates 3,900 Unserviceable Weapons

The Sierra Leone Commission on Arms and Ammunition (SLCAA) has announced the destruction of 3,900 unserviceable weapons in 2025, increasing the total number of firearms dismantled to over 8,500 in previous phases.

This initiative forms part of the Commission's ongoing strategy for disarmament and arms control.

Major General (Rtd) Christian Fahim Marah, Commissioner and Registrar of the SLCAA, presented these figures during a public briefing.

He also noted the Commission's official transition from the former National Commission on Small Arms, in alignment with the Arms Trade Treaty and the ECOWAS Convention on Arms and Ammunition.

To enhance traceability and reduce illicit arms circulation, the SLCAA has implemented a nationwide weapon marking system.

This system, operational in all regions except the Western Area, enables authorities to track the ownership and movement of firearms.

Additionally, Major General Marah disclosed that the Commission has issued over 1,000 licenses to private individuals for legal firearm possession.

These measures, he noted, reflect broader national and regional efforts to promote peace, security, and accountability in arms management.
