Bio inaugurates fishing port to boost Sierra Leone's blue economy

President Julius Maada Bio has inaugurated the construction of the Julius Maada Bio Industrial Fishing Port at Black Johnson Beach, a landmark initiative designed to fundamentally reshape Sierra Leone’s fisheries and advance the national blue economy. The project is the first of its kind in the country and is viewed by coastal communities as a critical opportunity to harness the wealth of the ocean for local benefit.

The modern facility is slated to incorporate advanced infrastructure, including specialized landing sites, processing facilities, and cold storage systems. These components are essential for mitigating post-harvest losses and ensuring high fish quality for both domestic consumption and international export, thereby boosting value addition across the fisheries value chain.

Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba, confirmed that the preparatory groundwork, including land acquisition and compensation, was conducted responsibly. The port is expected to generate hundreds of direct and indirect sustainable employment opportunities, particularly for local youth and fishing communities, while simultaneously strengthening monitoring systems to combat illegal fishing.

Supported by international partnerships, the port reflects a broader commitment to attracting investment into critical economic sectors. However, as the project transitions to the implementation phase, stakeholders remain focused on ensuring transparency concerning timelines, environmental sustainability protocols, and equitable access for artisanal fishermen.
