Biometric Permits Now Mandatory: Grace Period Ends, Enforcement Begins

The Government of Sierra Leone has formally announced that, effective April 1, 2026, biometric residence and work permit cards serve as the sole legally recognized documentation for non-nationals. Following an extensive transition period—which included an initial 45-day window and a subsequent one-month extension—all legacy paper-based permits are now officially invalid for identification, residency, and employment purposes.

Nationwide enforcement is currently in effect. Verification procedures are being conducted at all border entry points, workplaces, and through targeted field inspections. Non-nationals must present valid biometric credentials upon request. Failure to comply may result in restricted movement at borders, administrative penalties, or the revocation of legal status.

Furthermore, employers are legally obligated to ensure all non-national staff hold valid biometric permits to avoid regulatory sanctions.

To support immediate compliance, the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security and the Sierra Leone Immigration Department have deployed trained personnel across regional offices in Freetown, Bo, Kenema, Makeni, Kono, and Port Loko.

Applicants may also utilize the official digital portal at www.unifiedpermit.gov.sl for renewals and verifications.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to a secure and transparent migration management system. No further extensions will be granted.
