Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai presented financial awards to the champions of the inaugural National Canoe Competition, acknowledging the event's importance in cultivating grassroots sports and youth engagement across Sierra Leone.
Donald Kalokoh, National Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Canoe Association, reported that the Independence Day competition required four months of preparation, including targeted outreach to 16 communities, such as Bonthe.
Due to logistical constraints, the final contest was ultimately restricted to seven communities competing across four distinct race categories.
Despite initially shortlisting sixteen communities, Kalokoh explained that logistical challenges ultimately necessitated restricting the final competition to seven communities across four distinct race categories.
Following the judges’ evaluation, Bonthe Community was declared the overall champion, with Black Johnson and Mama Beach securing second and third place, respectively.
In his presentation, Dr. Abdulai lauded the association for successfully organizing the competition without government financial dependence, stressing the positive outcomes for youth development.
He commended the association’s independent approach, stating that the expansion of canoeing across various communities positively engages young people.
Furthermore, Dr. Abdulai emphasized the crucial necessity of maintaining fairness and inclusivity, asserting that adherence to openness and diverse perspectives would be essential for driving the sport's nationwide growth.
