Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has initiated discussions with various stakeholders to emphasize the importance of supporting an efficient population and housing census, scheduled for 2026.
This initiative is part of the strategic plan for PHC '26, which aims for complete digitalization in line with international standards. A trial is planned for December 2025, a year ahead of the actual census date in 2026.
The meeting, led by Statistician-General Andrew Bob Johnny, sought to secure political support and community engagement to effectively communicate with citizens. It highlighted the link between political endorsement and the successful implementation of census activities. He noted that the government of Sierra Leone has allocated $6.5 million for this project, supplemented by assistance from various development partners.
Representatives from ten political parties, along with members of the All Political Parties Association (APPA) and the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), attended to mobilize constituents and encourage peaceful community participation.
Additional political figures will participate in the Census Advisory Committee to ensure impartial oversight as preparations progress towards the enumeration phase.
This engagement builds on previous consultations with local authorities across all 16 districts, reinforcing confidence in the census process, upholding civic guidelines, and maintaining communication with Stats SL to ensure the census remains unbiased.
