In a decisive move to address severe overcrowding within the country’s correctional system, Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, the Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, ordered the immediate discharge of 31 inmates in Kenema on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
The released group, mainly remanded on minor offenses, comprising of twenty men and four women, qualified for discharge following comprehensive case management reviews designed to identify eligible candidates under established legal criteria.
Regional detention centers have operated under significant strain in recent years, facing acute shortages in sleeping arrangements, daily food rations, and medical provisions. Judicial leaders emphasized that the intervention reflects a broader commitment to expediting pending cases and restoring dignity to prison facilities nationwide.
Officials confirmed that additional reviews will continue across other districts as part of an ongoing reform program aimed at strengthening human rights protections and increasing efficiency across Sierra Leone’s legal system.
