On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh presided over a prominent cycling event in Freetown. This initiative was specifically designed to advocate for public health wellness and to reinforce national social cohesion.
Themed "Unity in Health," the "Cycling with the Chief Minister" program was executed through a multi-sectoral collaboration. Key partners included the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Sports Authority, the National Olympic Committee, and the Sierra Leone Cycling Association.
The event convened a diverse assembly of professional cyclists, youth organizations, senior government officials, and the general public. This collective effort aimed to institutionalize active lifestyles and enhance community engagement, directly supporting Sierra Leone’s broader Human Capital Development objectives.
Participants completed a cross-city route from the Up Gun Turntable to the Family Kingdom Resort. This journey served as a practical demonstration of the power of sports in fostering national solidarity and improving public health outcomes.
In his keynote remarks, Dr. Sengeh emphasized that the initiative serves as a platform for unifying Sierra Leoneans—with a particular focus on the youth—while catalyzing a shift toward healthier living and more robust community involvement.
He further observed that cycling represents an inclusive sport that transcends demographic boundaries, offering participation opportunities for individuals of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The event was attended by high-level representation, including the Minister of Sports, the Minister of Works and Public Assets, and the Deputy Ministers of Health and Youth Affairs.
Dr. Sengeh underscored that the program embodies the principle of "Radical Inclusion," ensuring that all citizens, including persons with disabilities, are empowered to contribute to a healthier and more integrated society.
Ultimately, the event underscored the government's commitment to youth empowerment, inter-agency collaboration, and the promotion of sustainable wellness across the nation.
